If your child's mind is like a canvas, whom do you want to hold the brush? Belief that all students can learn.
PRIDE is an innovative archdiocesan program designed to meet the special needs of students of average and above average intelligence with minimal learning disabilities in grades K-8.
The program is staffed by highly qualified teachers trained in the field of special education. Teachers design specific programs to meet the personal needs of each child. Small class sizes ensure that children receive their fair share of individualized attention, thus strengthening the values of integrity, respect and dependable work habits.
The program is funded by tuition and supplemented by the Cardinal's Lenten Appeal. PRIDE remains a source of hope for parents who want their children in a Catholic school environment.
Program Structure.
Students in the PRIDE Program benefit in three ways. First, an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) is developed for each student accepted into the program. Special education teachers use the IEP to plan language and math instruction in a small group setting. This occurs during the regularly scheduled language block and math time periods.
Secondly, each child in the program is an integral part of a regular mainstream homeroom. Part of their day is spent with their mainstream classmates in social studies, science, religion, and special area subjects. Students are expected to meet success in mastering the content of these areas. Sometimes modifications are made based on the IEP.
Finally, students benefit from additional assistance with classroom structure and organizational skills.
Components of PRIDE.
PUPILS: We see our pupils in our program as children first and foremost, then as students who have special needs.
RECEIVING: Students in grades K-8 receiving these services are children of average or above average ability with learning disabilities in one or more areas.
INCLUSIVE: Our students go from isolation to integration in a caring, Christian environment.
DIVERSIFIED: Though individualized, the program includes development of study strategies and organizational skills coupled with modifications within the mainstream.
EDUCATION: Our mission is "to teach as Jesus taught." Children are ensured a total education in a warm, loving environment.
Proud Voices - Individuals affected by PRIDE.
The PRIDE Program addresses my daughter's special needs AND celebrates her special talents. When she is struggling, warm supportive teachers help her develop creative solutions. At the same time, high expectations encourage her to develop to her full potential.
--Diane Pniewski, parent
PRIDE helps me understand my work. It helps me deal with dyslexia. With PRIDE, I can accomplish my dreams.
--Amy Fowler, student
PRIDE reduced the student to teacher ratio and increased my son's chances of academic success.
--Paul McMullen, parent
PRIDE helps me to understand more complicated things. When I was not in PRIDE, my grades were not as good as they are now. Now, I do well in all of my classes, not just PRIDE. Because I am in PRIDE, I can accomplish what I want to accomplish when I am older. I feel better about myself, because I am doing better in and out of school. This will help me reach the goals that I want to achieve in life.
--Heather Stewart, student
